Alaskans Urge Sen. Murkowski to Vote YES on ENDA on July 10

Today in Anchorage, Mary Elizabeth Rider and Vickie Green, who Senator Lisa Murkowski said was a major influence in her decision to support marriage equality for all couples and was named an Angel of Adoption based on the senator’s nomination, joined me in gathering the postcards HRC collected over the last three weeks. These postcards, which were filled out by more than 2,000 Alaskans, ask for Senator Murkowski’s support on the federal Employment Non-Discrimination Act, creating a federal standard and making it illegal to fire someone solely based on their sexual orientation or gender identity in all fifty states. The Human Rights Campaign added a cover letter to the postcards, signed by Marty Rouse, the National Field Director, asking for the Senator’s support on ENDA.

The Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee, where she holds a seat, is scheduled to vote on the bill on Wednesday, July 10. With her leadership and support in the committee, we hope that a bipartisan bill can be passed through the Senate by years end in order to protect American employees from discrimination in the workplace and treat workers with respect by judging them for their job performance and work ethic, and not who they are or whom they love.

If you haven’t already, please call Senator Lisa Murkowski’s office today and express why you want her support on the Employment Non-Discrimination Act at 202-224-6665. If you are interested in volunteering and/or signing a postcard please contact Karlene Rytkonen at Karlene.rytkonen@hrc.org or 253-380-1447. Act fast, because the day of the vote has almost arrived.
