Alaskan Pride and Determination

Anchorage PridePost submitted by Nick Martin, HRC Field Coordinator

This weekend, thousands of members of the LGBT community and allies gathered in downtown Anchorage for the annual Alaska Pride festival and march organized by Identity, Inc., Anchorage's LGBT center. HRC has three staff on the ground in Alaska to take part in the annual celebration and to engage the community in encouraging Sen. Lisa Murkowski to support the federal Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA), which would prohibit discrimination in the workplace based on someone’s sexual orientation or gender identity. Nearly 1,000 Alaskans signed postcards on Saturday asking Sen. Murkowski to support ENDA.

ENDA is expected to be voted upon in the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee this summer. Sen. Murkowski is a priority for advocates to recommend ENDA out of committee. This would bring a fully inclusive ENDA to a vote later this year by the full Senate. If approved, this would be the first time that either chamber of Congress has approved a trans-inclusive nondiscrimination bill.

You can join with hundreds of Alaskans and thousands of HRC members and supporters across the country asking their senators to support ENDA by clicking here.  HRC will keep staff on the ground in Anchorage over the next month working with our partners and volunteers to ensure success.
