AFER’s Chad Griffin Joins HRC-LA to Discuss Prop 8 Case
February 22, 2011 by Tony Wagner, Western Regional Field Director
Chad Griffin, co-founder of the American Foundation for Equal Rights (AFER) was the guest speaker for the kick off of the new season of HRC LA’s popular Talkin’ Q Politics event at East/West lounge on February 15th in West Hollywood. After a brief overview of AFER’s founding and work to fund the legal challenges to overturn the infamous Prop 8 in California, Chad fielded questions from the audience. Although not an attorney himself, Chad nonetheless deftly answered a variety of questions relating to the court challenges to overturn Prop 8 as well as the broader issue of marriage equality in the US. Chad was optimistic that the 9th Circuit appeal would overturn Prop 8. Although whatever the outcome, Chad repeatedly thanked HRC for its continued support for AFER and the court challenge, as well as it’s long record of success in fighting for equal rights for all LGBT Americans. Several members of the HRC LA Board of Directors, Board of Governors and local Steering Committee, as well as the evenings hosts, Sue LaVaccare and Ted Holmquist, co-chairs of the LA Political Committee, welcomed new faces and regulars to the evenings program and socializing, which drew over 30 attendees. It was a great start to a new year in LA!
