The following post comes from Pete Webb with the HRC Board of Governors:
HRC members from NYC, Long Island and Upstate New York joined hundreds of advocates at the May 8 lobby day in Albany. HRC members joined other advocates in meetings with Sen Krueger, Sen Savino, Sen Skelos, and other officials.
Our primary focus was to thank our friends that supported marriage equality and encourage all elected officials to continue the work for LGBT equality - including support of homeless youth programs and transgender rights.
The Gender Expression Non-Discrimination Act (GENDA) will prohibit discrimination against transgender people in employment, housing, credit, education and public accommodations, and also extend hate crimes protections.
Seventy-eight percent of New York State voters support passage of such a law, including 74 percent upstate, 79 percent in New York City, 82 percent in downstate suburbs, 86 percent of Democrats, 67 percent of Republicans and 78 percent of Independents.
