Advancing Equality in Mississippi

Last week I had the humbling experience of speaking at Mississippi State University Spectrum’s third annual Fall Social.
The Fall Social, which I founded with a few others students, is meant to bring campus and community LGBT organizations together so that new LGBT and allied students at MSU can see what our community has to offer.
To see the room filled to capacity brought a sense of closure for my time as a community organizer in the town of Starkville, Mississippi. It is a visual representation of how the LGBT community in Starkville is growing and thriving.
This sentiment was expressed by the many conversations I had over the course of the evening with attendees. While I was just one person in a much larger movement, I am thankful I was able to engage my community. These words are really my ‘advocacy mantra,’ and they are what will guide me in my position as a field organizer for HRC Mississippi as I continue to engage my fellow LGBT Mississippians.
