Activists demand GID reform at APA meeting
May 18, 2009
This week, the American Psychiatric Association (APA) is holding its Annual Meeting at San Francisco's Moscone Center. Tonight, a group of dedicated advocates and professionals will be on hand to address attendees as they arrive for the evening's activities: a coalition of gender-variant and transgender people, medical and therapeutic specialists, and allies calling themselves GID Reform Now. They'll be there to give voice to concerns many in the transgender community share about the direction to date of the APA's Work Group on Sexual and Gender Identity Disorders and to call on the APA to make some important changes as this group's work goes forward. HRC issued a statement of support this afternoon, adding our voice to help deliver this important message.
