Act Now to Push for Workplace Protections
April 17, 2012 by Dan Rafter, Online Campaigns Manager
In 29 states, you can be fired just for being gay; in 34 you can be fired just for being transgender – and it’s perfectly legal. LGBT people remain vulnerable in the workplace, but there are two things that can – and must – happen to ensure no one ever loses their job simply because of who they are.
First, the White House must issue an Executive Order barring federal contractors from discriminating based on sexual orientation and gender identity. This will bring federal contractors in-line with the best practices of major American corporations and offer protections for LGBT employees that they are currently lacking.
Secondly, the Senate must hold hearings on the Employment Non-Discrimination Act. Only through a comprehensive ENDA can we ensure LGBT employees across the country are safe in their jobs and secure in their economic well-being.
We need your help in sending a strong message to President Obama and Congress. Tell them the time is now to act on workplace protections for LGBT Americans.
