Act Now: TN High School Principal Tells Gay Students They’re Going to Hell
March 1, 2012 by Dan Rafter, Associate Director of Communications
A high school principal at a Tennessee school reportedly told students during an assembly that gay students were going to hell. Local news outlet ABC 24 has a report from a student who says Haywood High School principal Dorothy Bond singled out LGBT and pregnant students: “At first she was talking about PDA and she turned around and she directly pointed to the gay people and said: if you're gay you're going to hell and if you're pregnant, your life is over.”
Act now to send a message this type of behavior from school officials is never acceptable.
Unfortunately, this isn’t the first time Bond has made inflammatory remarks. According to a parent in the district, she made sweeping and insensitive remarks at another assembly several years ago: “A couple of years ago…at an assembly she told the young men if they're sitting between the legs of a girl getting their hair braided for a few hours, that they must be gay.”
HRC is encouraging members to contact Dr. Marlon D. King, Superintendent of Haywood County Schools, and call on him to launch an investigation into the incident.
Haywood High School’s non-discrimination policy does not cover either sexual orientation or gender identity.
