A Step Toward Equality in Anchorage, Alaska

alaska-welcome signFor the past several months, the Anchorage Assembly has been considering an anti-discrimination ordinance that would prohibit discrimination in employment, housing, public accommodations, and credit based on sexual orientation or gender identity. Regional Field Director Tony Wagner and Regional Field Organizer Terry McGuire have been coordinating with Equality Works, the ACLU of Alaska and other allies to support this much-needed action. Yesterday, the Assembly voted 7-4 to approve the ordinance, which now goes to Mayor Dan Sullivan.  Mayor Sullivan has seven days to decide whether or not he will veto the ordinance--he said before the vote that he has not made up his mind. Anchorage is the state's largest city--nearly half the state's population lives there. It would be extremely significant for the city to enact these protections for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender residents. If you live in Anchorage, please call Mayor Sullivan at (907) 343-7100 and ask him not to veto the ordinance. Everyone deserves the right to be judged on their merits, and we hope this ordinance will become law.
