A Postcard from the Tar Heel State
March 29, 2011
Greetings from Charlotte, North Carolina! HRC recently gave a $10,000 grant to Equality North Carolina to fight against Senate Bill 106. This bill would amend the state constitution to prohibit marriage or any other form of relationship recognition for same-sex couples. This means it could prohibit domestic partnerships and civil unions.
I have been in Charlotte a little over a week now, working closely with ENC to activate our supporters in the Queen City, and have seen so much support for our campaign. On Thursday evening at the Lesbian and Gay Community Center, ENC’s Executive Director, Ian Palmquist, and Rebecca Mann, Director of Community Organizing and Outreach for ENC, continued their Equality in Action Tour facilitating a town hall meeting to discuss the campaign against SB106. With more than 50 people from all areas of Charlotte in attendance we were able to demonstrate a clearer picture of how harmful this amendment is, especially if it reaches the ballot box in 2012. The message is that the amendment would put bigotry and discrimination into North Carolina’s founding document. It’s also bad for business and the economy. The discussion also included strategy to prevent the bill from passing, and brainstorming with the community on ways to spread our postcard campaign.
If you live in North Carolina, help Equality NC by volunteering for our Equality in Action Postcard Campaign against the anti-LGBT amendment! Getting postcards signed by your friends, neighbors, family, and coworkers is a great way to both bring the issue to light and to let NC senators and representatives know that voters in their district care about equal rights. Later that evening we went Clubbing for Equality at Petra’s Lounge in the Plaza Midwood ‘gay’borhood. We ran a successful postcard campaign garnering 50 sign ups and tips of other businesses to attend! If you and your friends would like to volunteer please contact me at [email protected] or call me 786 718 8555.
