A Degree in Equality: Top 50 LGBT-Friendly Campuses
August 15, 2014 by Candace Gingrich, Associate Director, Youth and Campus Engagement Program
Imagine you are LGBT or Q, beginning your senior year of high school. You are thinking about colleges and realize that there are more than 4,500 higher education institutions from which to choose. Where do you start your search?
Each year Campus Pride collects self-assessed information from schools about LGBT-friendly policies, programs and practices. Participating schools include public and private institutions with student populations that range from 1,600 to over 50,000. Due to this year's outstanding results, for the first time Campus Pride is releasing a list of the Top 50 LGBT-Friendly Colleges and Universities. It includes smaller private schools, such as Minnesota's Augsburg and Macalester Colleges, and LGBT-friendly public school mainstays, like the University of Maryland and University of California - Berkeley.
According to Campus Pride Executive Director Shane Windmeyer, "There is a lot to be learned" from the top 50 schools, which are specifically addressing the recruitment and retention of LGBT students as well as the safety of transgender students.
Now that you know where to look, you might also be asking yourself how you’re going to pay for it. Check out HRC's database of scholarships available to LGBT and allied students, like HRC Intern Trinice McNally did, where you just may find that answer.
