A Convention of Thanks for Two Governors in New Hampshire
June 4, 2012 by Marty Rouse, National Field Director
In Manchester this weekend, over 600 Granite Staters were on-hand for the New Hampshire Democratic Party State Convention.
They heard not only from their own Governor John Lynch, but also from Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley. O’Malley is the current Chair of the Democratic Governors’ Association. It was great to be there to cheer these two great allies of equality and to thank openly gay New Hampshire Democratic Party Chair Ray Buckley for his strong and steady leadership and dedication to public service. Chairman Buckley is also President of the Association of State Democratic Chairs and the Vice-Chair of the DNC.
Governors Lynch and O’Malley played key roles in winning marriage in their respective states and this November’s elections will determine the future of marriage equality in both as well.
In New Hampshire, Governor Lynch is not running for re-election. In order to stop a repeal of the marriage equality law next year it will be important to elect more fair-minded state legislators and a supportive governor.
In Maryland, the marriage equality law passed by the legislature thanks to the strong support of Governor O’Malley is expected to be on the ballot this November for a public referendum.
HRC is proud to have played a key role in winning marriage in both states and is working hard to protect these victories.
