Major Michigan job providers are adding their voice and influence to the growing movement in support of expanding the state’s Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act (ELCRA) to include sexual orientation and gender identity.
Under the current legislation, it is illegal to subject an individual to differential treatment or for employers to discrimination in the workplace on the basis of religion, race, color, national origin, age, sex, height, weight, familial status or marital status.
"Together, our Michigan work ethic and our adherence to ideas of basic fairness and equality have been a cornerstone for our economy, creating jobs, opening opportunities, encouraging investment and supporting families," Jim Murray, President of AT&T Michigan and Co-chair of the Michigan Competitive Workforce Coalition, said in a statement. "Updating ELCRA to include the sexual orientation and gender identity of Michigan residents strengthens that cornerstone at the very time Michigan is pushing hardest toward economic recovery."
The nine founding members of the Michigan Competitive Workplace Coalition include:
- Blue Cross Blue Shield
- Consumers Energy
- Dow Chemical Company
- Strategic Staffing Solutions
- Herman Miller
- Whirlpool Corporation
