“8: The Mormon Proposition” Premiers Sunday at Sundance
January 22, 2010
As the Prop 8 trial continues in California (including this week's bombshell evidence that the Mormon church played a significant role in the campaign yet sought to keep their involvement quiet), a thought provoking new film is premiering this weekend at the Sundance Film Festival. "8: The Mormon Proposition" by filmmaker Reed Cowan explores the Church of Latter Day Saints and their influence over California's constitutional ban on marriage equality. You may remember last year, Cowan interviewed Utah State Senator Chris Buttars who said that LGBT people were "the greatest threat to America." Cowan's exhaustive research promises a film that will not only expose the church's stealth support of the campaign but also change hearts and minds on marriage equality in the process. HRC was proud to have contributed some footage to the film and HRC Board of Directors Member Bruce Bastian lent his support as an executive producer. Following Sunday's screening, HRC President Joe Solmonese will participate in a panel discussion about the film and Prop 8 along with Cowan, Bastian, narrator Dustin Lance Black, San Francisco City Attorney Dennis Herrera, National Center for Lesbian Rights Executive Director Kate Kendall and Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation President Jarrett Barrios. For more on the film, visit their website, see the schedule at Sundance and join their Facebook group to stay updated on how you can see the film.
