14-Year-Old Radio Host Claims Obama Is Making Kids Gay
June 7, 2012 by Maureen McCarty, HRC Associate Director of Digital Media
Caiden Cowger, a 14-year-old Conservative radio host from West Virginia, took to the airwaves to slam President Obama and Vice President Biden for his support of LGBT equality.
“Homosexuality is a belief,” Cowger ranted. “It is not mandatory in that person. The person is not born that way. ...It is a decision. There – it’s getting worse where I’m at. I see younger people that is [sic] turning out to be homosexuals – it’s equal, boy and girl both. All of them are starting to turn to homosexuals. We've got about 30 – I’d say 30 teenagers in this county that I’m at that are homosexuals. And it is sickening.”
He goes on to explain that Obama’s support for LGBT equality is encouraging youth to be gay. “President Obama [says], ‘It’s alright, it’s OK, you were born that way.’ …rather than saying ‘You need to turn away from homosexuality.’”

This egregious misuse of media sends the wrong message to youth. As illuminated in the HRC’s landmark report released this morning, Cowger’s rant is the sort of message that is working to stack the deck against LGBT youth. Ninety-two percent of youth say they hear negative messages about being LGBT. Seventy percent hear it from the internet and 69 percent from their peers.
