HRC is again on the ground in the Land of Lincoln.
Continuing the momentum of last fall’s successes in both securing marriage equality in Illinois and passing the Employee Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) through the U.S. Senate with bipartisan support, we are once again working with the Americans for Workplace Opportunity Campaign to pass ENDA through the U.S. House of Representatives in this legislative session. This is the last hurdle before ENDA can go to the President’s desk to be signed and provide protection for all LGBT Americans against workplace discrimination.
An overwhelming majority of Americans support workplace protections for LGBT people, and Illinois already has laws that protect LGBT people from discrimination in the state. Support is so widespread, in fact, that many believe these protections already exist across our nation. In 29 states, including Illinois, there are no state laws protecting LGBT employees from being fired just because of who they are.
With as many successes as our movement has had nationally, such a basic protection for LGBT folks should be easy to support. Unfortunately, several key legislators in Illinois still aren’t on-board and we need their support if we’re going to push ENDA over the top. Keeton and I are working with a team of organizers across the state to secure the support we need from our U.S. Representatives to pass ENDA. But we need your help.
