Join HRC on Thursday, February 20th at 6:30pm for an evening with author Clifford Chase. Chase will read from his new memoir The Tooth Fairy, take your questions and stay for a book signing.
In 2001, years before the publication of his wildly successful debut novel Winkie, Clifford Chase began pulling sentences out of the air. Each fragment described only a moment, but together they captured his current state of mind and formed a narrative of that period of his life, which included such disparate incidents as a tooth extraction, a trip to Italy, starting on anti-depressants, and hating his job as a public relations writer.
As the reflections piled up, they cohered and took shape to describe more than a decade of experiences including the aftermath of 9/11, the decline of his elderly parents, accounts of sexual confusion and a dramatic reconsideration of his brother Ken, who’d died of AIDS in the late 1980s.
Those experiences are collected in The Tooth Fairy, praised by Next Magazine as “a funny, strange and ultimately heartwarming recollection of a contemporary gay life with a detached wit reminiscent of David Sedaris.”
The way the book is written – in pitch perfect fragments – is crucial to the deeper message: We experience and remember in short bursts of insight, terror, comedy and love.
Books will be available for purchase.
