IN flagThis is a big week for Hoosiers who support fairness and freedom for all loving couples.  Tomorrow, the Indiana Legislature will gather for “Organization Day”, the first official day of the new legislative year.  It is expected that Senate President Pro Tem Long and House Speaker Bosma will be pushed to talk about what they see happening with moment on the effort to put a ban on same-sex marriage on the Indiana ballot in 2014.  Freedom Indiana, the campaign to stop HJR6, will be out in full force as the legislators enter the Capitol.

As the legislators begin to determine what will happen with HJR6, opposition continues to mount.  This afternoon, Purdue University Faculty Senate passed a resolution in opposition to the legislation.  If the resolution makes it through the rest of the internal university processes, they will join other public universities like Ball State and Indiana University who are speaking out against the bill.  And earlier today, fifty clergy came together in Indianapolis to present a letter signed by over 300 mostly mainline clergy from across Indiana who are  opposed to the marriage ban.

And public opposition continues to mount as the legislative session nears. The latest Ball State/WISH TV Hoosier survey of 600 adults released on Friday reveals an increase in opposition to the amendment from 54% in 2012 to 58% in 2013.  The number who favor the amendment remained consistent at 38%.

In order to increase public pressure on the legislators to oppose the amendment, this weekend Freedom Indiana hosted their first Statewide Day of Action, with hundreds of volunteers across the state facilitating over 1,500 constituent calls to legislators in just two days.  Tomorrow, HRC Regional Field Organizer Lindsey Clark will head to Evansville where she will take responsibility for organizing in two legislative districts.  Lindsey, fresh off the Illinois win, is energized to be joining the Freedom Indiana team and activating HRC’s members and supporters in her districts and across the state.  If you’re interested in getting involved, contact Lindsey Clark at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address). With only a few months remaining to make a difference, every person is needed.
