It’s fitting that the Safe Schools Improvement Act was just reintroduced in the U.S. Senate and the Student Non-Discrimination Act was reintroduced in both chambers of Congress. On February 28, 60 LGBT HBCU students, leaders and advisors gathered at the White House for a Black History event. It marked the first time that LGBT African American students were invited to celebrate Black History Month at the White House. Unfortunately, Black LGBT history is not as part of mainstream Black History celebrations. The administration hosted this event acknowledging that there are many African American LGBT leaders in the world, including at the White House.

With widespread support from across the state, Maryland is on a path to become the sixth state to enact marriage equality legislation. But the fight isn't over yet. Last week, Delegate Tiffany Alston -- an original co-sponsor of the bill and key vote on the House Judiciary Committee -- suggested that she might pursue a civil union amendment. So when I arrived in Chestertown to speak with EROS, an LGBT advocacy group on the campus of Washington College, students were ready to take action. Over 40 students made calls to the office of Delegate Alston, asking her to stand by her original commitment to full marriage equality for all Maryland citizens.
