Kickballers for Marriage Equality

The following post comes from Lisa Votino-Tarrant, HRC field organizer on Long Island, working to pass marriage equality: My colleague, fellow Long Island organizer, Dominique Salice and I have been working closely with the Hofstra University Pride Network to harness the excitement the campus has for passing marriage equality. This included HRC tabling at some Hofstra Pride events this past week and even found one of our organizers literally “pitching in” during a “Kick Out the Hate” Kickball Tournament sponsored by Hofstra Pride.

Last night, the Las Vegas steering committee hosted the opening reception of Nevada's biannual Equality Days, where constituents come to Carson City to speak with their legislators face to face. It was great to see many community partners and members rally for a great cause. Our guest speaker, Allyson Robinson, Associate Director of Diversity at HRC, spoke with passion about her story and the need for passing an inclusive ENDA and more specifically, AB211, state legislation would provide anti-discrimination policies to the state's employment laws in regards to gender identity and expression.

Earlier this week, the New Mexico state legislature passed SB78, legislation that would create bullying prevention policies and implement anti-bullying programs in New Mexico public schools by the start of the 2012 school year. The bill now heads to Governor Susana Martinez’s desk, where she will have the opportunity to do the right thing.

The Midwesterner speaks openly and passionately about herself and her family – her older brother, younger sister, mother and father. Abby’s father came out as gay when she was entering her teenage years. She’s now a college senior, and she wants everyone to know that she’s all right.

That’s what makes the story of 17 year-old Jonathan Correia so inspiring. Jonathan is a straight wrestler from East Providence, Rhode Island, who is showing his support for LGBT equality by wearing an HRC sticker on his headgear.
