HRCs Religion and Faith Program has been exploring the concept of acceptance in the first few bus stops. In addition to our Pathways to Acceptance forums, Sharon Groves, HRC’s Religion and Faith Program Director, spoke this Sunday at First-Plymouth Congregational Church about the spiritual discipline of acceptance. Sharon asked the congregation to think about acceptance as a life-long process rather than one time destination.

A lesbian couple visiting Dollywood’s Splash Country says a gatekeeper asked Olivier Odom to turn her HRC “marriage is so gay” t-shirt inside out before entering the park. Odom was with her wife, Jennifer Tipton, and the children of some friends. She complied so the kids could have a fun time at the park – but couldn’t help but notice patrons sporting t-shirts that displayed the Confederate flag, as well as offensive tattoos.

So when a Tennessee Senate committee advanced the legislation known as the “Don’t Say Gay bill,” which would prohibit honest, healthy and age-appropriate conversations about sexuality in Tennessee’s classrooms, the Star Trek legend and HRC Coming Out spokesperson simply could not remain silent. So he took to YouTube to stand up for young LGBT Tennesseans.

Governor Bill Haslam has ignored the business community and signed into law a bill that wipes out county and city anti-discrimination laws, despite the Tennessee Chamber of Commerce and Industry reversing their earlier support and now opposing the bill.
