Second LGBT Judicial Nominee for D.C. Superior Court Receives Hearing

Yesterday, Jennifer Di Toro was questioned before the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Government Affairs on her qualifications to be appointed to serve as Associate Justices of the D.C. Superior Court. Di Toro was nominated by the President on February 3, 2011. If confirmed, Di Toro will by the second openly-LGBT nominee to be appointed to the D.C. Superior Court by the President. In April of 2010, Marisa Demeo was confirmed by the Senate for appointment to the D.C. Superior Court.

This week, the Nevada legislature passed two vital pieces of legislation, SB 331 and SB 368. Both incorporate gender identity and expression into the state's non-discrimination law, one specific to housing and the other to public accommodations. Earlier this month, the Nevada legislature added gender identity and expression to the employment non-discrimination law. The bills now move to Governor Sandoval’s desk for his consideration.

Yesterday, the Minnesota state Senate did the unthinkable – they passed a proposal to enshrine discrimination in the state’s constitution. The legislation would amend the constitution to define marriage as only between one man and one woman, thus not recognizing the love and commitment of thousands of gay and lesbian couples in the state.
