Pushing for Workplace Protections in North Carolina

Last week, members of the Charlotte community and I met with the Legislative Correspondent of U.S. Representative Larry Kissell from the 8th District of North Carolina to talk about supporting the Employment Non-Discrimination Act. Kissell voted in favor of the Matthew Shepard Act, which passed last year, and voted to repeal “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.”

I’m in North Carolina working to build constituent support for the Employment Nondiscrimination Act. This is my first time in North Carolina and people here are very friendly! I love their southern drawl and appreciate their hospitality. Everyone I pass on the street seems to greet me with a smile—even when I’m wearing my “legalize gay” t-shirt (okay, some give me a sideways glance with that).

Dear Mr. President, Two Saturdays ago – that’s the day I was looking forward to for four years. May 8, 2010: Commissioning Day. My parents should have pinned on my rank of Second Lieutenant. I was prepared to take the oath. To swear that I’d support and defend our constitution. But instead, I am writing a letter to you. There was no pinning. There was only the sudden reality that “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” still very much exists and is still very much enforced.

On Tuesday, April 27th, at around 4:00, I left Charlotte, NC, with fellow members of Charlotte Rainbow Action Network for Equality (CRANE) and HRC Charlotte supporters Matt Comer and Lacey Williams. After a quick stop by Raleigh to pick up another member of the group, Melissa Siegel, and to grab a bite to eat, we were DC bound. Our plans: to set up a demonstration the next day on Capitol Hill for the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”.
