Call on GOP Presidential Candidates to Denounce Dangerous “Reparative” Therapy
July 12, 2011
Last week Republican Presidential candidate Michele Bachmann demonstrated a dangerous level of extremism by signing her name to the far-right group the Family Leader’s pledge “The Marriage Vow: A Declaration of Dependence upon Marriage and Family.” Not surprisingly, Rick Santorum also signed the anti-LGBT pledge. Today, HRC is calling on the GOP candidates for President to disavow the dangerous “ex-gay” or “reparative therapies” endorsed by Michele Bachmann and her husband Marcus, a practicing, but unlicensed Minnesota psychologist whose clinic has been known to practice these therapies. Join us by signing our petition. Michele Bachmann is obviously out of touch with mainstream America. Unfortunately her extremism rises to a dangerous level. Reparative therapy, the kind endorsed by Bachman, has been strongly denounced by leading medical organizations, including the American Psychological Association and the American Psychiatric Association. Both organizations have concluded that same-sex attraction is normal and attempts to change it could be harmful.
