The following is from HRC’s Shelena Williams, who is working with our Field Team for marriage equality in Maryland: Yesterday I spent the afternoon on the campus of University of Maryland, College Park talking to students about marriage equality. Regional Field Organizer Adrian Matanza and I, along with other organizers from Equality Maryland took post outside of Stamp Student Union; where we spoke to students about the significance of the campaign, and our need for volunteers.

I spent this Saturday afternoon with eight terrific HRC volunteers on the phones calling for the freedom to marry in Maryland. We were calling HRC members and supporters in Maryland to make sure they know about the January 31st Why Marriage Matters Day at the State Capitol in Annapolis.

Marriage equality in Maryland is on the brink of reality and Adrian Matanza and I are right in the thick of it. Working with the field team at Equality Maryland, we are mobilizing constituents to urge state legislators to recognize ALL families in the state.

As legislatures begin convening around the country, marriage equality was front and center today in the two of the three states on the brink of enacting equal marriage.

Maryland employees can now enroll their same-sex spouses as dependents for health insurance. Maryland's Attorney General announced in February that the state could recognize out-of-jurisdiction same-sex marriages. Gov. O'Malley's change to Maryland employee benefits is a strong step in the right direction.
