Maine Marriage Opponents Raise the Stakes

After a celebration dinner with NH Freedom to Marry's Mo Baxley and NH Democratic State Party Chair Ray Buckley and others it's back in the car for a two hour drive to Portland. I will be meeting early in the morning with Equality Maine's Betsy Smith and others who will be forming a winning campaign to defend marriage equality at the ballot box in Maine this November. We helped win marriage in New Hampshire and we'll help defend it in Maine.

I spent a couple of weeks in Maine in 2005 on the "Maine Won't Discriminate" campaign where we successfully upheld an inclusive nondiscrimination law from a "people's veto" so I'm particularly interested in how the process will play out with the recent marriage decision. Getting a newly passed law on the ballot follows a standard set of guidelines and doesn't require all that many signatures.
