Last night was the big LGBT kick-off event for Mark Dayton’s campaign for Governor here in Minnesota. Sponsored by HRC Minnesota PAC and OutFront Action PAC, the event brought Broadway star Gavin Creel and Mary-Mitchell Campbell to town to lend their significant talents to the effort.

Following the recent release of videos of Julianne Moore and Kenneth Cole talking about marriage equality, today the Human Rights Campaign released a new video from Jeanne-Moutoussamy-Ashe, the widow of the late tennis star Arthur Ashe. The campaign raises the public profile of marriage equality in the Empire State leading into this fall’s elections and next year’s anticipated legislative action. Today the National Organization for marriage boasted in an email that they've "just released what may very well be our most powerful ad yet . . . focusing on the right of Minnesotans to vote for marriage, with footage from Dr. Martin Luther King’s famous speech and the civil rights movement." The ad actually co-opts Dr. King's fight for civil rights in order to advocate putting the rights of same-sex couples on the ballot for a popular vote!

The Mark Dayton for a Better Minnesota campaign is kicking off the fall in true style. Senator Mark Dayton and Broadway superstar Gavin Creel will be starring in a fundraiser geared towards the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community this Friday, September 24th at the Women’s Club in Minneapolis. Come join HRC and Outfront Minnesota for a night of music and community bonding as we ramp up our activities before November 2nd.

Terry and I arrived in Minneapolis on Monday evening and in the ensuing 36 hours have settled into our roles with the Democratic Farmer Labor Party (DFL) campaign here in Minnesota. We’re working with Spencer Cronk from the DFL to mobilize the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community to vote for fair-minded candidates up and down the ballot. In a year when our friends are likely to have difficult challenges, it’s important for us to turn out the LGBT community to put them over the top.
