Florida’s Governor Charlie Crist declared today, July 22, “Explore Adoption Day” in the state, with the hope of finding families for the 4,500 children and youth in Florida who are awaiting a permanent family. The NAACP held its Centennial Convention in New York, NY from July 11- 16. The event was truly historic not just for the organization but specifically for LGBT people because it was the launch for the first Board LGBT Task Force. The Task Force was created to recognize the need for more understanding and tolerance from within the African American community. Julian Bond - Chairman of the NAACP - has pushed for this with the board but there has been push back at him on the issue.

Growing up, many of us watched School House Rock’s “I’m just a Bill” short on Saturday morning television. Of course, as any two minute catchy video, it oversimplified actual process quite a bit. Nonetheless, it did reflect accurately how many bills move through the legislative process. Yet when someone eventually writes the book on passing the Matthew Shepard Hate Crimes Prevention Act (aka the Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act, aka the Law Enforcement Enhancement Act, aka the Hate Crimes Prevention Act, etc…)
