GLSEN Releases LGBT Student Survey - School Safety Still a Serious Concern

Today, GLSEN, the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network, released its National School Climate Survey, which documents the experiences of LGBT students from across the country. The 2009 National School Climate Survey shows that while progress has been made in providing safe schools for LGBT youth, much work remains to be done. Among the report’s key findings: • 84.6% of LGBT students reported being verbally harassed, 40.1% reported being physically harassed and 18.8% reported being physically assaulted at school in the past year because of their sexual orientation.

The annual Gay Pride parade in downtown Jerusalem took over the streets yesterday. This year was a slightly different than the years past, holding a much more “March on Washington-esque” attitude. Gone were the floats and most of the wild outfits from last year. Yesterday’s march was purely political and commemorative of last year’s Tel Aviv gay and lesbian center massacre.

Earlier this week, the HRC Foundation announced the winners of the 2010 Generation Equality Scholarship for LGBT and allied students who have demonstrated exceptional commitment to achieving queer equality. The $2000 scholarships are part of HRC Foundation’s Youth and Campus Outreach Program, which aims to provide tools, facilitate connections and empower young people to fight for LGBT equality on campus and beyond.
