LGBT Health Awareness Week kicks off on March 28 with the theme “Come Out for Health”. As a members of the LGBT community know, “coming out” is not a one day or one week activity. It is a life-long journey. But sometimes it takes a special event like this to get us past that all-too-often, self-imposed obstacle to healthcare – procrastination.

You won’t want to miss the video that Abby recorded for HRC’s new project, We’re All Right. The Midwesterner speaks openly and passionately about herself and her family – her older brother, younger sister, mother and father. Abby’s father came out as gay when she was entering her teenage years. She’s now a college senior, and she wants everyone to know that she’s all right.

Last night on the eve of St. Patrick’s Day here in the Ocean State, volunteers for marriage equality turned out for our most successful phone bank yet. Having been on the ground for only a week, we’re starting to see volunteers show up in larger numbers – which is good, since we could see action in the RI House as soon as next week. Volunteers made phone calls to voters in Rep. Marcello’s district and the response was overwhelmingly positive and uplifting.

Some of the most powerful voices for equality can come from our straight allies – those with LGBT friends and family who see the effects of discriminatory anti-equality policies firsthand, and those who feel strongly about advocating for the equal rights that all Americans deserve. That’s what makes the story of 17 year-old Jonathan Correia so inspiring. Jonathan is a straight wrestler from East Providence, Rhode Island, who is showing his support for LGBT equality by wearing an HRC sticker on his headgear.
