We are less than one week away from the Senate vote in Congress to repeal Don’t Ask Don’t Tell (DADT) this year and with a few key senators on the fence, we need all hands on deck! Next week will be your last chance to come dial for equality by contacting HRC members in these priority states and patching them through directly to the offices of their Senators who sit on the Armed Services Committee. So far, our volunteer phone banks have yielded almost 8,500 of these calls, urging Senators to repeal DADT this year and they came straight from constituents who care about equality, our tax dollars and our national security.

"We were aware that the Congressman is ok with ‘sexual orientation’ but has a hard time with the ‘gender identity’ part of the bill. I shared a couple of stories about friends that have lost their jobs in Central NY due to their gender identity and asked him to please remember my face and please make our country a place where all people can work without being fired because of who they are."

Dear Mr. President, On November 4, 2008, I spent the evening at the Democratic Headquarters of a small town. I watched anxiously as election results poured in from across the nation, nervous and hopeful that enough Americans had believed in the change you promised to bring. Then it happened. The broadcaster announced that the network was declaring you the winner; the tears welled up in my eyes. Cheers erupted and I turned to hug the person standing closest to me, as we all did.

Chalk up one more win for equality! As of today, May 20, LGBT citizens of Leon County, Florida no longer have to worry about being harassed or fired because of their sexual orientation or gender identity. On May 11, the Leon County Commission voted 5-2 in favor of new protections in the county’s Human Rights Ordinance prohibiting discrimination against LGBT people in employment, housing, and places of public accommodation.
