Senate Hate Crimes Hearing at 10am

This morning the Senate Judiciary Committee will hold a hearing on the hate crimes bill, known as the Matthew Shepard Act. Testifying in support of the bill will be Attorney General Eric Holder, the first time a sitting Attorney General has testified in favor of the bill. Read Holder's testimony [pdf]. While the actions of the senate lead some to believe that nothing will ever be passed in Albany, I am confident that once the leadership battle is resolved, we will see marriage equality passed in the New York legislature.

Today, I joined a handful of HRC staffers and interns to attend a ceremony honoring Dr. Frank Kameny, the LGBT civil rights hero, coiner of the phrase “Gay is Good” and longtime Washington DC resident. Dr. Kameny was being honored by the Office of Personnel Management (OPM), formerly the Civil Service Commission (CSC) - the department that fired Dr. Kameny 52 years ago.

The New York Senate session is now over for the day. The Democrats gaveled in, acknowledged that the bills passed in yesterday’s special session were invalid because they weren’t passed concurrently in the House and Senate, Dems gave a few quick speeches and then they gaveled out.
