Long Island Couple Celebrates Anniversary by Writing Letters for Marriage Equality

Last week in Wading River, NY I attended a house party in support of the marriage equality bill. The hosts, Cara and Jenn, have been together for almost fifteen years, and this week they’ll celebrate the five year anniversary of their commitment ceremony. Eighteen months ago their family expanded to include JP (see below covered in cake).

On July 14, 2008, Luis Ramirez lost his life after he was knocked unconscious and severely beaten in Shenandoah, PA by a group of teenagers who yelled racial epithets during the attack. Despite overwhelming evidence of the hate-fueled murder, two of the perpetrators were acquitted of all serious charges and were convicted only of simple assault and alcohol-related offenses. Wednesday, the Schuylkill County Court sentenced them to a mere six and seven months in prison.

They spoke in the backdrop of our nation’s Capitol surrounded by hundreds of clergy who came to Washington, D.C. from across the country to advocate with their members of Congress for the passage of the Mathew Sheppard Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act and the Employment Non Discrimination Act.
