Broad Coalition Opposed to Sessions Hate Crime Amendments

The Leadership Conference on Civil Rights released a letter today to Senators urging them to defeat Sen. Sessions' amendments to the hate crimes bill to add the death penalty and to force the Attorney General to create unnecessary regulations. Votes are expected on the Senate floor later today. As we told you about over the weekend, today the Senate will take up the Defense Department authorization bill again and three amendments threaten to weaken the Matthew Shepard Hate Crime Prevention Act that the Senate voted to add last week.

While the Matthew Shepard Act amendment was successfully adopted on Thursday, three other amendments related to hate crimes will be debated on Monday. HRC staff has now reviewed these three last minute amendments from Senator Jeff Sessions (R-AL) and believes that they are unnecessary, unhelpful and should not be adopted.
