Gay Beach Day in Ocean Grove

On Saturday July 25, I packed my bag with sunscreen and headed to the beach along with the rest of the East Coast. However, I was headed to my first Gay Day at the Beach in Ocean Grove NJ. HRC and Ocean Grove NJ have a long standing relationship, and this very close community started this annual tradition in 2008. Like so many LGBT communities, Ocean Grove wanted to find a way to give back to wonderful LGBT organizations that give so much to our community.

On Tuesday July 28, New York State Assemblyman Danny O'Donnell was the guest speaker for HRC's monthly forum Talking Queer Politics (TQP). This series is hosted every month at Therapy Bar and Lounge in Midtown Manhattan, and last night just over 40 New Yorkers showed up to hear about the state of marriage. Assemblyman O'Donnell has championed the marriage equality bill through the New York State Assembly twice; the first time was in 2007, and then in 2009 with an even wider margin of victory.

HRC President Joe Solmonese will join Senators and other civil rights leaders this morning at a press conference to discuss the nomination of Judge Sonia Sotomayor to the U.S. Supreme Court. It will take place at 11:45 a.m. at the Capitol Visitors Center, SVC 200/201.

Earlier this month, HRC’s Youth & Campus Outreach Program once again attended the Campus Progress National Conference. It was an opportunity to talk with many of the 1,000+ students who attended about the role progressives play in the LGBT rights movement. While Candace Gingrich (Youth & Campus Outreach Associate Director) and I tabled throughout the day, many of HRC’s summer interns were listening to prominent speakers, participating in panel and small group discussions and enjoying spoken word performances.
