Over the course of this year, HRC produced more than 20 videos on everything from bullying to the DOMA decision to marking the 25th anniversary of National Coming Out Day. We forged new ground with our “Equality Rocks” series and built on previous successes with our “Americans for Marriage Equality” series. The videos garnered more than 1 million views and showcased the breadth of HRC’s work.
Here are some of HRC’s favorite videos from 2013:
Wentworth Miller Talks About Coming Out, Overcoming Struggles
At HRC's Seattle dinner in September, actor, writer and HRC member Wentworth Miller shared his heartfelt story of triumph in a speech about his journey to coming out as a gay man. In the remarks, Miller discussed the hardships of living in the closet, and the reasoning behind his decision to publicly come out as gay.
Florence Welch & Dev Hynes Cover Icona Pop's "I Love It"
During a June benefit concert for the Human Rights Campaign in NYC, Florence Welch of Florence and the Machine joined Dev Hynes of Blood Orange for a surprise performance. The duo captivated the crowd with a cover of Icona Pop’s "I Love It." The Internet loved it, too - the video, part of HRC's Equality Rocks series, has been viewed nearly 200,000 times.
25 Years of National Coming Out Day: Coming Out Still Matters
Over the past 25 years, Americans of all walks of life—celebrities, politicians, athletes, and everyday Americans—have come out and shared their stories. Every person that speaks up changes more hearts and minds and creates new advocates for equality. This video celebrates trailblazing coming out moments in American media that raised the profile of LGBT Americans and sparked important dialogue about the fight for equality.
What does the DOMA decision mean to you?
One day after the Supreme Court ruled in the Defense of Marriage Act case, HRC released a video that explains what the decision means for legally married gay couples across the country.
Hillary Clinton for HRC's Americans for Marriage Equality
In March, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton joined the fight for marriage equality by filming a testimonial as part of HRC's Americans for Marriage Equality campaign. Her moving message about her experience as secretary, what she learned while representing our country around the world, and what she has come to believe, has been viewed more than 420,000 times.
HRC Celebrates Moms & HRC Celebrates Dads
These next two videos, released around Mother's Day and Father's Day, celebrate moms and dads who, in ways both big and small, help build momentum in the fight for full equality for LGBT Americans.
