Auburn University football coach, Guz Malzahn, said Tuesday that he would welcome a gay player on the Tigers football team.

His statement came in response to Michael Sam’s recent coming out, as Sam made history as the first Division I college football to come out as gay. Sam, defensive end for the University of Missouri and 2013 SEC Defensive Player of the Year, is expected to be a top pick in the NFL Draft next month.

Sam has joined a growing number of athletes who have come out recently, including Tom Daley, Jason Collins, Megan Rapinoe, and others.

When asked if a gay player would be welcome at Auburn, Malzahn replied, “No doubt.”

Malzahn went on to describe his initial reaction to Sam’s coming out, stating, “I think most teams that have a player that helps them win and be successful – that’s what I thought about it.”
