Top Chef contestant and Chef for Equality Art Smith will embark on a journey with his partner Jesus Salgueio to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro.

If successful, the duo would become the first legally married same-sex couple to top Africa’s tallest mountain.

Smith hopes their climb will help to raise awareness for LGBT equality in a continent where the LGBT community is often persecuted.

In East Africa, the Ugandan Parliament, which returned this week, may once again consider the Anti-Homosexuality Bill criminalizing same-sex relations.

The so-called “Kill the Gays” legislation would make being gay a crime punishable by death or life imprisonment in some cases.

Join HRC in cheering on Smith and Salgueio as they work to raise awareness of the dire state of the LGBT community in Africa.
