Post submitted by Maureen McCarty, former HRC Deputy Director of Marketing

Today in a 17 to 13 note, the Arizona Senate passed SB 1062, which, if enacted into law, would allow businesses to refuse services to the LGBT community on the basis of religious freedom.

Please pass along this post to anyone you know in Arizona today and urge them to contact their state House member and urge them to vote no.

The bill, SB1062, could be used to protect business that discriminate not only again the LGBT community but also unmarried women or those of different religions.

The majority of Americans do not support legislations such as SB 1062. In an August HRC/Third Way poll, 69 percent of those surveyed in 2013 believed business should not be able to refuse services to the LGBT community.  And 57 percent believed businesses providing services for a same-sex couple’s wedding was “simply fulfilling a contact for services” rather than a public endorsement.

Join HRC and voice your opposition against Arizona’s “License to Discriminate.”  Contact your State House member tomorrow and urge them to vote no.

Call the Arizona State House Info Desk at (520) 398-6000 to be connected with your state House Member.
