Patrons of an Italian restaurant in Overland Park, Kansas, have rallied around a server who was refused a tip by anti-gay customers because of his sexual orientation.

After waiting on a couple at a Carrabba’s Italian Grill, the 20-year-old waiter found a hateful message on the back of the check.

“Thank you for your service, it was excellent. That being said, we cannot in good conscience tip you, for your homosexual lifestyle is an affront to GOD,” the customer wroteCarrabba's.

The server has seen an outpouring of support from the community, with other customers requesting to be seated in his section and tipping generously. A campaign is underway to flood the restaurant with supportive customers on Friday.

The challenges facing LGBT youth are profound and widespread, with more than half reporting that they have been verbally harassed because of their LGBT identity, and many identifying intolerance in their community as the most difficult aspect of their life.

Stories like this one are a call to action to adults and young people who want to ensure that LGBT youth grow up in a safe and caring environment. Find resources on HRC’s Youth and Campus initiatives here.
