GavelThis week, the American Bar Association (ABA) adopted a resolution that recognizes LGBT rights as human rights worldwide.

The first part of the resolution states: “That the American Bar Association recognizes that lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people have a human right to be free from discrimination, threats and violence based on their LGBT status and condemns all laws, regulations and rules or practices that discriminate on the basis that an individual is a LGBT person.”

The ABA, a national organization representing attorneys, is in-step with a number of governmental figures who have taken a stand for LGBT rights internationally. On the highest level, President Obama, Secretary of State John Kerry and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton have shared a commitment to LGBT equality as a basic human right.

Previously, the ABA passed a resolution to limit LGBT panic defenses and adopted an inclusive anti-bullying resolution.

HRC applauds the ABA’s continued work and support on issues surrounding the LGBT community.
