Yesterday, Americans heard the news that beloved comedian Robin Williams passed at the age of 63.
The Oscar-winning actor filled our hearts with joy and laughter, though privately battled with depression, according to a statement released by his publicist.
In the last 45 years, suicide rates have increased by 60 percent worldwide, according to the World Health Organization. Suicide is among the three leading causes of death among those aged 15 to 44 years in some countries, and the second leading cause of death in the 10-24 years age group.
According to a 2011 study, 21.5 percent of gay, lesbian or bisexual teens reported attempting suicide while just 4.2 percent of straight kids reported the same. In more conservative communities, researchers found a higher percentage of suicide attempts: 25 percent of LGBT teens and 9 percent of straight teens.
Our hearts are with Williams’ family and loved ones today.
