Throughout 2014 we took great strides toward expanding LGBT equality throughout the nation and around the globe as we achieved milestones on several fronts.

From the significant increase of marriage equality states to the expansion of workplace equality, 2014 was truly a year of notable accomplishments. Scroll through our site, Best of 2014, and join us in celebrating these wonderful achievements.

With the addition of 19 states winning marriage equality this year, the number of marriage equality states was more than doubled for a total of 35 plus Washington, D.C. Currently 64 percent of the American population lives in a state with marriage equality.

HRC launched Project One America, a first of its kind comprehensive, multi-year campaign to expand LGBT equality in the south through campaigns in Mississippi, Alabama and Arkansas. We also held our inaugural Time to Thrive Conference, a premier, national convening to promote safety, inclusion and well being for LGBTQ youth everywhere, and were joined by speakers such as Chelsea Clinton, Ellen Page and Lance Bass.

We launched the iconic viral campaign, Love Conquers Hate, that ran prior to, during and after the 2014 Olympic Games in Sochi as people from around the world stood together in support of Russia’s LGBT community, which is targeted by hateful “anti-propaganda” laws. The campaign was seen worldwide, bolstered by participation from a wide-ranging group of celebrities, athletes and politicians such as Jamie Lee Curtis, Matt Damon, Sarah Silverman, Chelsea Handler, Kevin Bacon, Andy Cohen, Jason Collins, Wentworth Miller, Megan Rapinoe and more.

Our country reached unprecedented benchmarks when, following the Supreme Court’s ruling in United States v. Windsor, the Obama Administration’s implementation of the Windsor decision constituted the single largest conferral of rights to LGBT people in history. President Obama also enacted a workplace discrimination law for transgender federal employees, ensuring 14 million more American workers will be protected.

The Human Rights Campaign extends appreciation and thanks our supporters for being paramount to our success throughout this past year. Please join us in applauding all of the accomplishments of 2014 and we look forward to continuing our mission in the New Year.
