Post submitted by Leigh Durham, HRC Field Organizer
With only a week left in the 2014 Legislative Session, New Mexico Senators and Representatives were reminded of the overwhelming support for marriage equality when the New Mexico Unites for Marriage campaign team hand-delivered over 5,000 signed postcards from constituents. In addition to the postcards, each legislator received a Valentine's Day gift bearing the message: "Love is Love."
Over the past several months, the NM Unites for Marriage campaign team, including two HRC field organizers, have been mobilizing New Mexicans around the state who support marriage equality and want to defend the recent State Supreme Court decision that solidified New Mexico as the 17th state extending the freedom to marry to same-sex couples.
Even State Senator Bill Sharer, who filed legislation before the Session convened to define marriage between a man and a woman, found a special delivery on his desk. His constitutional amendment, Senate Joint Resolution 6, has not made it to the Committee floor yet and may not be heard at all during the 30-day session.
