Three hundred vets, and growing. But it’s not enough. We are on the path of creating the biggest veteran-focused lobby day on DADT in history. Veterans from around the country – from Massachussetts to Florida, from California to Virginia, from Indiana to Ohio to West Virginia – are coming to represent not only their home state, but their individual capacity as veterans who have dedicated a portion of their lives to serving the United States.

HRC organizers have been busy in Jacksonville, Florida. Two weeks ago, the Voices of Honor tour visited the University of North Florida and last Friday, a group of four veterans and three supporters of DADT repeal met with Senator Bill Nelson’s Jacksonville staff. The veterans, some whom served before DADT and witnessed its implementation, provided first-hand accounts of their experiences with the military policy when they met with Sen. Nelson’s North Florida Regional Director. The greater Jacksonville area has three large Navy bases and all four veterans served in that branch of the service.

This week I joined Janice Hughes, HRC’s Director of Publications, in walking the streets of Alexandria, asking fair-minded Virginians to sign postcards to Senator Jim Webb urging him to repeal Don’t Ask Don’t Tell now.

The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) announced today that Pastor Bradley Schmelling of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Atlanta, and his partner, Rev. Derin Easler, have been added back to the roster of the denomination’s authorized clergy. So in the words of the old Shaker hymn, things have “come round right”. Pastor Brad became the face of the movement for full inclusion of LGBT clergy in the life of the ELCA when he was removed from the roster after announcing his commitment to Derin several years ago.
