Five years after it was first proposed, a bill prohibiting discrimination based on gender identity and expression was once again the subject of a legislative hearing in Connecticut. HB 6599, “An Act Concerning Discrimination,” would add “gender identity or expression” to Connecticut’s antidiscrimination statute, thus protecting transgender people from discrimination in employment, education, housing, public accommodations and credit.

Now is our best chance to make Civil Unions in Colorado a reality. Last week, the Colorado Senate passed the Civil Unions Bill (SB 172) with bi-partisan support 23–12. Three Republicans joined all 20 Democrats voting for the bill. Now, the bill is scheduled to be heard in the House Judiciary Committee this Thursday. The 2012 presidential campaign is getting underway. President Obama is staffing up his campaign operation in Chicago while Republicans begin the process of figuring out their presidential nominee. All eyes - and the drama - are on how things shake out on the Republican side. The first GOP debate is scheduled for May 7 at the Ronald Reagan Library in California followed by another June 7 in the all-important primary state of New Hampshire.

HRC’s NOMExposed Project Director Kevin Nix sat down with blogger Jeremy Hooper (Good As You) this morning to discuss the influence of the National Organization for Marriage, the nation’s leading anti-LGBT organization led by Maggie Gallagher and Brian Brown. Hooper began tracking and challenging NOM’s arguments against marriage equality back when the organization was founded in 2007.

Today, the Colorado Senate passed a comprehensive civil unions bill by a 23 to 12 vote, and now moves to the House of Representatives.
