Changing the Course of History: Best of 2012

Visibility Partnerships

Over the course of the year, HRC worked closely with numerous high-profile celebrities including Brad Pitt, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Eric Stonestreet, Morgan Freeman and many others to advance equality. Actors, fashion designers, chefs, musicians, athletes, faith leaders and more gave both vocal and financial support to our movement. News about their advocacy spread via mainstream and social media, allowing our stories to be shared in parts of the country that are becoming more welcoming for LGBT people.

  • With just a few crucial weeks left before the election, HRC and David Hagedorn teamed up to host Chefs for Equality, which raised funds and awareness for the Maryland marriage fight and featured the area’s top chefs and mixologists, along with emcees Tim Gunn of Project Runway and Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley.
  • The Equality Talks speaker series launched this year, bringing together a wide variety of experts in LGBT-related fields to hold conversations both in person and online with HRC members and supporters. Speakers have included Bishop Gene Robinson, Nicholas Kralev, José M. Zuniga, PhD, MPH, and many more.
  • For several weeks this summer, Barneys New York donated 10 percent of sales from its new shoe floor in support of HRC and the continued fight for marriage equality nationwide.
  • We continued our partnerships with esteemed designers such as Kenneth Cole, Marc Jacobs and Levi’s to raise the profile of the fight for equality via custom-designed T-shirts.
