Changing the Course of History: Best of 2012

Exposing Anti-Gay Groups & Leaders

Opponents of equality tried time and again in 2012 to thwart progress by the LGBT community. With the help of our members and supporters, HRC pushed back against the National Organization for Marriage and other anti-LGBT groups and leaders - all while polling consistently shows that more and more Americans support equality.

  • Through our NOM Exposed initiative, we called out NOM’s confidential and racially divisive strategy to thwart marriage equality. That strategy included creating an artificial wedge between the LGBT community and other minority communities, such as African-Americans and Latinos.
  • An HRC report found that the Roman Catholic Church, a close ally of NOM, has spent nearly $2 million fighting marriage equality.
  • We launched aggressive online and earned media efforts against Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan, using key research to elevate their past anti-LGBT actions and rhetoric.
  • After Chick-fil-A COO Dan Cathy embraced his fast food chain’s anti-LGBT discriminatory donations, HRC and its members and supporters sent a loud and clear message to the brand’s consumers. More than two dozen HRC supporters protested a Chick-fil-A food truck in D.C.
