Position Summary:
The HRC Communities Manager is a regular, full-time position who reports directly to the Director of HRC Communities & Volunteer Relations (Director).
The Manager is primarily responsible for managing and supporting a set of assigned HRC steering, emerging and pre-emerging community committees, an assigned region, and providing back-up management and support to the HRC Communities & Volunteer Relations Director, the other HRC Communities Manager and the HRC Communities & Volunteer Relations Assistant. The Manager provides training, leadership development, communications, strategic planning, administrative/logistical/technical and motivational support to these communities and the Region. The Manager will have frequent interactions with high-level volunteer leaders, board members and staff in a variety of situations.
Position Responsibilities:
- Serve as the primary staff contact for Area Representatives, Alternate Area Representatives, Administrators, and Steering Committee Co-Chairs for an assigned set of communities, and the Board of Governor Regional Co-Chairs in an assigned region. The Manager also provides secondary support to the steering committees’ Volunteer Coordinators and Web Content Managers.
- Work with, guide and motivate communities, volunteers and leaders to reach/exceed fiscal year goals by helping them to build and execute annual work plans and succession plans.
- Strategically identify, cultivate, recruit and steward local, regional and national volunteer leaders in partnership with all program areas at HRC.
- Work cooperatively with internal divisions, departments, and programs to coordinate programmatic assistance and communication to and from the communities.
- Act as conduit of information between the Director, communities, staff and board leadership.
- Assist with all aspects of developing, marketing and executing training curricula/toolkits, workshops, planning meetings and conferences in Washington, DC and in communities through the year.
- Manage correspondence to and from community members and other volunteers not associated with formal HRC communities in the Region.
- Conduct analysis and provide monthly report as to the state of the communities in the Region, and a quarterly report as to the progress towards fiscal year goals for the communities in the Region for the Director.
- Provide primary support to the Region’s monthly conference call including, building/vetting the call agenda, staffing the call, taking and distributing minutes and conducting the necessary follow-up.
- Lead efforts to manage, edit, and enhance program videos and the HRC Steering Handbook and other resources.
- Develop and manage the program’s year-round volunteer stewardship/appreciation program.
- Organize and lead effort to plan and carryout annual awards reception for steering committees at the Equality Convention.
- Serve as a representative of the Human Rights Campaign at activities, meetings and events around the country.
- Carry out additional duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Position Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree and two (2) to four (4) years relevant work experience in mid-level program management in a professional environment.
- Passion around HRC’s vision, mission and the work of volunteers.
- Emphasis on impeccable customer service, with the ability to anticipate stakeholder needs.
- Demonstrated experience in outreach to and successfully working with diverse communities.
- Experience working with high level volunteers/boards and/or meetings/events planning. (Prior HRC volunteer leadership and/or staff role experience a plus.)
- Excellent group dynamics and communication skills, including public speaking, interpersonal communication, small group communication and technical/business writing.
- Strong ability to convey/deliver HRC’s message to recruit, motivate and steward volunteers and members.
- Knowledge about gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender issues, the history of the civil rights movement and the Human Rights Campaign and how the organization operates.
- A good understanding of HRC programming, including: diversity outreach, fundraising, membership building, advocacy, education, event planning & execution, and grassroots organizing, with a spike in at least one key area.
- Aptitude to recognize patterns and trends, conduct analysis, and provide recommendations for change utilizing creative skills to enhance the program.
- Ability to work well under pressure with high-level volunteers, board members and staff as a team player, team leader, and project manager.
- Strong record of experience in team building, group facilitation, organizational behavior/development, conflict resolution/mediation, training and leadership development.
- Demonstrated strong professional ethic is required in or order to deal with confidential and sensitive volunteer, community, board and organizational matters.
- Well organized, detail oriented, goal driven and able to prioritize and manage multiple assignments/ tasks in a positive, timely manner in a fast-paced environment.
- Demonstrated computer skills: including Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook, Access, MapPoint, Project, ROI, the Internet, among other applications.
- Fluency in Spanish language is a plus.
- Extensive and regular overnight travel is required, including weekends. Peak time period for travel is January through April
Performance Evaluation:
As a manager responsible for a set of HRC communities and a region, the Manager will be evaluated based upon:
- Communities adhering to organizational policies, protocols and guidelines
- Communities meeting and/or exceeding fiscal year goals
- Volunteers in communities attending national, regional and local trainings
- Area representatives participating in regional calls and submitting monthly area representative reports
- Communities developing and executing annual work plans and succession plans
- The overall strength and quality of the communities’ programs
- Successful partnerships with the regional co-chairs
- Responsiveness/customer service to volunteers and staff
- Completion of special projects successfully, as assigned
Hours:
Normal business hours are 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM, however this position requires, the support of evening and weekend teleconferences, meetings and events. This position is not eligible for the telecommuting program.
