HRC Foundation Center for the Study of Equality Research Fellowship

Overview

The Center for the Study of Equality, the nonprofit, nonpartisan research center of the Human Rights Campaign Foundation, advances the understanding and acceptance of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people through independent scholarship, policy analysis, and shared knowledge.

The Center is founded on the principles that sexual and gender prejudice is rooted in a false and harmful mythology and that education is the foundation to ending discrimination.

A Research Fellowship at the Center offers graduate and doctoral students an unparalleled opportunity to work in research and advocacy at the nation’s largest gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender civil rights organization.

Activities

Fellowships are dedicated to careful examination of an issue or area. Responsibilities can include planning a project, preparing a literature review, assisting in research, writing analysis, or evaluating a study. Fellows and HRC Foundation staff work together to design projects that will contribute to the Fellow’s interest or area of work. Potential research projects include analyzing public opinion trends, researching communities of color, and investigating youth outreach strategies.

Fellows are closely involved in the Center’s daily operations and have opportunities to join in other areas of HRC’s work, such as participating in lobby visits or volunteering in local political campaigns. Fellows are also expected to make the most of the many government- and nonprofit-hosted conferences, workshops and seminars in the nation’s capital.

Outcomes

Alumni of the Center for the Study of Equality currently work in private research firms, within the labor movement, or are continuing their education in graduate programs. Fellows gain advanced knowledge and develop research skills in their chosen area, as well as take away practical experience working with a national GLBT organization in Washington, DC. Fellows also develop professional skills and begin building a professional network.
